  Highlights

  • Identifies file format & displays important stream properties
  • Drag & drop input file for quick identification
  • Demultiplexer extracts video & audio streams
  • Identification results can be saved in a text file
  • Command line version enables execution of MPEGID in batch files or scripts
  • Available for Windows, Linux, & OS X

Available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X, the MPEG Stream Identifier (MPEGID) is an indispensible tool that rapidly identifies and characterizes the file formats commonly used in digital television, streaming media, and DVDs.

The MPEG standard specifies several different video, audio, and multiplexing formats. Knowing that a file is an "MPEG stream" doesn't tell you much; "mpg" is often used as the file type for both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video as well as system, program, and transport streams.

Identifying and characterizing a media file is as easy as dragging and dropping the file onto the MPEGID interface. If the input file is a video or audio stream, MPEGID will display a list of properties that characterize its content. If the file is a multiplexed stream, a tree structure is displayed that illustrates the hierarchy of components in the multiplex, and important properties of all components are shown.

MPEGID includes an integrated Demultiplexer, which allows you to extract and save video and audio elementary streams from existing system, program, transport stream, or MPEG-4 media files. A command line executable is also available in the MPEGID installation. It enables execution of MPEGID's identification and demultiplexing functions in batch files or scripts for high-volume applications.

Video Elementary Streams

For MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (SD and HD), MPEG-4 part 10 / H.264 / AVC, and MPEG-4 part 2 video elementary streams, MPEGID displays several properties that characterize the encoding and the source format.

Audio Elementary Streams

MPEGID characterizes the major digital audio formats: MPEG Layer I and II Audio, MP-3 (MPEG Layer III) Audio, AC-3 (Dolby Digital), Enhanced AC-3 (E-AC-3, Dolby Digital Plus), DTS (Digital Theater Systems), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), MPEG-4 AAC (HE-AAC), and SMPTE 302M.

Multiplexed Streams

MPEGID displays important properties of MPEG-1 System Stream (SS), MPEG-2 Program Stream (PS), MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS), MPEG-4 ISO Base Media File, and VOB multiplexes, and identifies each elementary stream (ES) in the multiplex.

Multiplex Properties
  • File Size

  • PCR PID & PMT PID (TS only)
  • PID of each ES (TS only)
  • Descriptor data (TS only)
  • stream_type of each ES (TS only)
  • stream_id of each ES
  • track_id of each ES (MP4 File only)
  • Properties (Video or Audio) of each ES

Demultiplexer

The MPEGID program includes a function that will extract a single video or audio elementary stream from an input system stream, program stream, VOB, transport stream, or MPEG-4 media file and save it as a binary file. Multiple elementary streams may be extracted from an input stream file by repeatedly running the Demultiplexer.

Command Line Executable

The MPEGID installation includes an executable that allows you to use MPEGID from the command line of command prompt ("MS-DOS") or shell windows. Both the identification and demultiplexer functions can be run using this executable. The command line MPEGID can be executed in batch files or scripts for high-volume or automated applications. Its output can be directed to a file for a saved text report.

System Requirements

MPEGID is available for Windows (2000, Server 2003, XP, or Vista), Linux (i386+ compatible, X11 R6.8 or newer), and Mac OS X (v10.3 or newer).

Download

MPEGID is available for free download. Once installed, MPEGID will run in demo mode until the full version is unlocked. The demo version supports all of the functionality of the full version except the Demultiplexer and command line executable.

The full version of MPEGID with Demultiplexer and command line execution is enabled automatically by the security dongle for any current Manzanita Systems software license.

The demo version may also be upgraded to the full version by registering and purchasing a license key for only $49.95 USD. To purchase a license key, contact us at 1-858-679-8990 or send email to mpegid@manzanitasystems.com. We accept VISA, MasterCard and American Express.
